Hip Osteoarthritis

Also known as Hip Arthritis

Hip Osteoarthritis Treatment

Problem

Osteoarthritis of the hip is a common problem and it can affect both men and women. Pain arising from the hip is typically felt in the groin but the pain can be at the front of the thigh or at the front of the knee and occasionally the pain is felt at the back of the hip joint. The pain is often worse after activity and is better after rest. The pain is often worse in cold weather or rainy seasons. The stiffness in the hip joint associated with this condition makes putting socks on and trimming toenails difficult. Sometimes, it can also cause problems getting in and out of a car, especially in a low car. The ability to walk distances is reduced and there is often a limp with each step.

Cause of hip osteoarthritis

The cause of osteoarthritis of the hip is unknown in most patients. However, there are some factors that increase the chance of developing Hip OA such as previous hip joint fracture or dislocation, previous hip joint infections, abnormal development of the hip joint as a child, obesity and a family history.

Treatment

There are many ways to manage the discomfort and pain of Hip OA including

  • Using a heat pack or a wheat pack for pain,
  • Taking simple painkillers like Panadol or Panamax,
  • Taking anti-inflammatory tablets such as Voltaren or Nurofen,
  • Weight Loss if overweight or obese
  • Avoid high impact activity such as running BUT keep active
  • Use a walking stick to help avoid falling

When all of the above fails to provide the relief you need, then it is time to discuss with your doctor about seeing a specialist.
